What is National Digital Health Mission?

The National Digital Health Mission or the NDHM comes under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). According to the central government, the NDHM will "improve the efficiency, effectiveness and transparency of the health sector" in India as it will allow people to access health services remotely via teleconsultation and e-pharmacies.

Under this scheme, which will be implemented in phases, doctors will all be linked to a central server and it will be made on the lines of Aaadhar Card. The Centre will also extend this scheme include pharmacies and medical stores into the servers shortly. As per reports, the health ID will also contain information about every test, disease, medicine and associated reports of a patient which can be accessed by an authorised person from anywhere in the country.

Every Indian will get a Health ID card. Every time you visit a doctor or a pharmacy, everything will be logged in this health card in your profile on a national scale. From the doctor's appointment to the medication advised, everything will be available in your health profile," PM Modi said.

Indu Bhushan, Chief Executive Officer, National Health Authority, said, “The core building blocks of NDHM such as Health ID, Digi-Doctor and Health Facility Registry shall be owned, operated and maintained by the Government of India. Private stakeholders will have an equal opportunity to integrate with these building blocks and create their own products for the market."

However, core activities and verifications, for example, generation of Health ID or approval of a doctor/facility shall remain with the Government, Bhushan said adding that additional components, like Personal Health Record (PHR) and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) solutions can be developed by private players as well, in line with guidelines that will be issued. All such products by private participants shall be as per official guidelines taking care of security, privacy and standards of the NDHM ecosystem, he said.

Hospitals, clinics, and doctors will all be linked to a central server. However, it is completely up to hospitals and citizens, whether they want to opt for the 'One Nation One Health Card' scheme or not. A unique ID will be issued to every citizen who opts for this card, through which he/she will be able to log in to the system

"From today, a big campaign is being launched in which technology will play a big role. The National Digital Health Mission is being launched today. This will bring a new revolution in India's health sector and it will help reduce problems in getting treatment with the help of technology," he said.
